Ailment of the Week: Inflammatory Bowl Disease

by Lindsay Ann Radke

Inflammatory Bowl Disease is a blanket term that describes three different intestinal diseases: Ulcertive Colitis, Proctitis and Chrohn’s Disease. A large percentage of the population suffers from these conditions. The main symptoms of Inflammatory Bowl Disease are: nausea, diarrhea and abdominal cramping; all of which can lead to anorexia. IBD can be a very debilitating disease and can even cause early death. Many patients who suffer from IBD are given anti-inflammatory medications such as Mesalamine, corticosteroids and immune modulators, all of which reduce inflammation. The downside of these prescription medications is that there are a lot of side effects that patients then have to take another medication to control.  In some instances when prescription medications are not enough, patients will go to the extreme of having portions of their intestines removed.

IBD’s root cause of the disease starts with immune cells congregating and causing inflammation in the intestines. What most people do not realize is that the cannabinoids, which is the active medical ingredient in the plant, is a natural anti-inflammatory. Patients who have taken medical cannabis as a means to control their IBD have experienced a decrease in nausea, diarrhea and stomach cramping. Many patients also start to get their appetite back and are able to gain necessary weight. Patients also experience less “flare-ups” and have fewer hospitalizations. Implementing cannabis into the patients daily life is very easy, once a patient gets used to cannabis, they realize how easy it is to use this treatment regime. Patient can use medicinal cannabis a variety ways, such as vaporizing, smoking, using edibles or using tinctures or cannabis pills, the decision is based on the patient’s preference of use. If you or a family member is suffering from Inflammatory Bowel Disease, seeking refuge with cannabis will be sure to relieve your symptoms. Bud of the Week: Blue Dream

The Station presents its Blue Dream, a Sativa dominant strain. Blue Dream has dense buds with blue and purple hues packed with trichomes that glisten like a lit Christmas tree. With the glistening beauty and abundant amounts of trichomes, it is clear that is has more to offer than some of the more “classic” strains.  Upon opening the jar, you are first hit with the sweet aroma of berries. Once you remove the strain from its container you are hit with the more complex spicy woody aroma with a side hint of vanilla, which will make anyone’s mouth water. The taste follows the complexity of the aroma. It begins with the sweet taste of berries, while throughout the smoke you taste the unmistakable flavor of sandalwood. The smoke is expansive, yet smooth, making this a perfect strain for people who are experienced and inexperienced smokers alike.

This Sativa will hit you within seconds with a real “wake-up call” feeling.  Starts with a very stony head high then finishes with a nice mellow body high. Nice functional euphoric high, that you can go about your day no problem while not feeling the urge to smoke again for hours.  There is also no “crash” that is commonly felt with most Sativas, rather the high curves off, leaving you feeling in a better mood and more energized.
Blue Dream is best suited for patients who suffer from moderate pain, muscle tension, depression and fatigue.  Come by The Station today and try some Blue Dream and experience the phenomenal look, aroma and taste of this beautiful Sativa.

Ailment of the Week: Sleep apnea

by Lindsay Ann Radke

Sleep apnea is a medical disorder that effects twice as many men (4%) as women (2%) from 30-60 years of age. Traditionally sleep apnea is characterized by frequent interruptions of breathing during sleep. These interruptions of breathing can last up to 10 seconds. There are three main types of sleep apea, the first and most common form of sleep apnea is when there is a blockage of the airway cause by the soft tissue in the back of throat closing, causing the blockage. The second form of sleep apnea is associated with obesity. The last form of sleep apnea is referred to as central sleep apnea, which is when the brain does not tell the muscles to breath. Sleep apnea is associated with a number of other serious medical ailments, which includes: fatigue, headaches, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, heart attacks and strokes. In 2002, the University Of Illinois Department of Medicine completed a study on rats. Investigators reported that doses of delta-9-THC and the endocannabinoid oleamide each stabilized respiration during sleep and blocked serotonin-induced exacerbation of sleep apnea in a statistically significant manner. The study was later published in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine in June of 2002.

The combination of delta-9-THC and oleamide created a concoction that enabled the rats to have more stabilized breathing by blocking the serotonin, thus reducing the episodes of sleep apnea in the rats. Patients using medical cannabis have experienced an improved quality of sleep, decreased instances of interrupted breathing and less perceived fatigue the following day. Since the study done by the University of Illinois, there have been no formal follow up studies; however, there have been several clinical and preclinical trails using THC, where the patients have used natural cannabis extracts and endocannabinoid to induce sleep and improve their quality of sleep. These studies have proven that the use of medicinal cannabis is very successful in the treatment of sleep apnea.

The Station views suffering solutions through knowing eyes

By Joseph Boven

Patient care comes first at The Station where staff members bring superior medication and customer service through the window of personal experience. With growers and tenders having seen the success of the natural remedy in their own lives, potency, care and performance are directed toward medical solutions.

Through the jungle of medical marijuana dispensaries, it is sometimes hard to discern the ones who are trying to make a quick buck and those that are earnest in their endeavour to help patients find lasting relief from their ailments. The Station, however, is not one that is lost in the trees but stands out as an example of individuals truly working with patient care in mind.

Patients stepping into the warm, wood-crafted interior of the Station find a place where there needs are not only met, but understood. Store manager, TJ Angelo, explained that he entered into the field as a result of his mother’s suffering through cancer. He said that it was seeing how medicinal marijuana helped her that opened his heart to helping others find the right treatment for their suffering.

“This is what got her through it,” Angelo said.

That type of care comes into play as Angelo works everyday with patients suffering from cancer, severe arthritis, sleeping disorders, devastating pain, and a host of severe ailments that restrict patients from experiencing a life to short to waste in unhappiness. He said that he and the dispensary’s other bud tender, an Iraq veteran whose use of medical marijuana helped him through wounds received in service to this country, develop a personal relationship with customers, partnering with them to find to find a marijuana solution that reopens the doors to a better life.

That perspective goes into the development and growth of each one of the Station’s medicines. As a result, the dispensary offers a line of fully-organic marijuana fertilized by top dressing and shop-brewed compost teas. And it further provides a non-organic line of strains grown with Canna, a Dutch nutrient that enhances bud development both in size and potency.

Known for the strength of their Diesel and Kush strains that are used to treat serious pain and sleep problems, the Station’s organic and non-organic medicines allowed to flourish without chemical pesticides used by other growers. Their process of using fully organic alternatives to harsh treatments ensures that patients’ medicines are full of healing cannabinoids, not harmful pesticides.

The stations strains are so effective for use in patient care that they breed 15 different seeds from their strains.

While the store specializes in its bud growing, it also offers an extensive selection of edibles and marijuana concentrates that, like its marijuana bud medications, are carefully tailored to provide the best results for a variety of ailments and patient concerns.

Every day Boulder area residents suffering symptoms caused by medical ailment or pharmaceutical medication step into The Station where they find a natural remedy to help them experience again a fruitful and productive life. If you are suffering and have wearied of pharmaceutical medications or simply want a dispensary that is working to help you, you could do no better than a trip to The Station.

Karing Kind’s organic medical marijuana aids patients and world

By Joseph Boven

Karing Kind’s organic-vegan line of medical marijuana offers patients relief from their ailments while caring for the flora and fauna of the world we share.

For centuries, humankind has been using nature’s medicine, marijuana, to treat many of its most difficult maladies. While some stores continue to use pesticides and chemical treatments to produce their medications, Karing Kind’s commitment toward patient care inspired them to harness organic technologies to produce medical-grade cannabis that is both potent and Earth conscious.

“The organic-vegan line is important to us because we believe the quality of our medicine is important, if not more important, as the quality of the food we eat,” Dylan Donaldson, the owner of Karing Kind, said. “What is better than organic-vegan.”

Karing Kind painstakingly mixes 100 percent organic soil with a small amount of bat guano and worm castings to grow 90 percent-vegan marijuana medicines. Whether patients take advantage of the dispensary’s selection of marijuana concentrates, in-house Nepali Hash — made through a monk-perfected, organic technique – or a wide variety of organic indica, sativa and hybrid strains to treat their medical needs, they can rest assured they are using a completely natural product that is free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

“All MMJ products are consumed into the body in many ways by patients, and we know it is important to have the cleanest and safest medicine available,” Donaldson said. “This is why we do not use pesticides of any kind.”

Opening July 1, 2010, on the day dispensaries were legally recognized in Colorado, Karing Kind helped its first patient rekindle a passion for life through the benefits of medical-grade marijuana. Since that time, the dispensary staff has guided thousands of patients on their path towards a life absent of both suffering and pharmaceutical narcotics.

“My mission is to get patients off of narcotic pharmaceuticals and on to what Mother Nature has provided to us for thousands of years for relief,” Donaldson said. “Many of our patients have succeeded or are on their way to this transition.”

With a discreet location just outside Boulder, the dispensary serves its patients in an inviting environment that allows illness sufferers of all ages the comfort of working with a knowledgeable staff to find the medication that solves their individual needs.

Karing Kind’s staff has been trained to use both product knowledge and customer insights to pair patients with medical solutions. They have succeeded in helping patients suffering from Crohn’s disease, HIV, arthritis, spinal injuries, and chronic pain using natural cannabinoid treatments offered by the dispensary.

Patients have been finding freedom to live their lives without the life-altering side-effects of pharmaceuticals for years through the benefits of nature’s medical marijuana. Karing Kind is committed to continuing that tradition by providing a growing number of Boulder’s illness sufferers an organic, 90 percent-vegan line of medical solutions that holistically cares for those it serves.

Ailment of the Week: Multiple Schlerosis

By Lindsay Ann Radke

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, incurable and unpredictable disease that affects the Central Nervous System. This disease has three main symptoms that include: spasticity (unusual tension or stiffness), tremor (uncontrolled movements) and balance issues. The symptoms, severity and progress of the disease vary from mild to severe depending on the patient. A patient who has MS also experiences flare-ups, and relapses. MS does not hold bias based on race or gender, this disease effects all races, ages and men and women.  With no cure, it is imperative that the patients seek refuge with medication. Traditional medications for MS often prove to work when the patient initially takes them; however, after awhile, patients start to build immunity to the medications and the patients symptoms begin to worsen.  Currently there are 40 medications that are actively used to treat the symptoms of MS. Often an MS patient will have to take an antidepressant, medications to fight nausea and fatigue and medications for muscle control. There have been several clinical trails for the medicinal marijuana approach to stabilizing MS. Throughout the trials, it has been shown that patients have not only experienced the short term effects of the stabilization of muscle tension and stiffness and elevated mood but patients are also experiencing more control over their tremors and moods. Additionally the studies have shown patients experienced fewer flare-ups and relapses, as well as a decrease in their overall disability rating over the time span of year. Patients can use cannabis by taking pills of D9-tetrahydromcannabinol, natural cannabis extract (found in edibles and tinctures) or by smoking. Currently the National MS Society is funding the controlled clinical trials for the effectiveness of the different strains of marijuana to improve the symptoms specific to MS. You can find the information for the clinical studies at http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00682929

Bud of the Week: Sour Diesel

Sour Diesel

A modern classic! The AlterMeds Sour Diesel is a potent sativa, with an instantly recognizable lemon and fuel-like aroma, and a soaring, long-lasting high.  While the specific genetic lineage of Sour Diesel is debated and possibly a bit unknown, it is thought to be related to Chem Dawg, a Colorado strain.

This wonderful medicinal strain provides relief for a range of ailments. Our patients often choose the AlterMeds Sour Diesel for its ability to aide in the relief of migraines, or to at least stave off the onset of one.  Its high THC percentage makes it a wonderful analgesic and appetite stimulator, while its aroma and flavor make it a true delight to inhale.

The AlterMeds Sour Diesel is highly praised and sought after among our regular customers.  According to The Strain Man“…Tested at a whopping 22.48% THC, this is some very, very strong and ridiculously gorgeous herb. You gotta try it for anything that ails ya!” One very pleased reviewer for The Westwordfound that “in some ways, AlterMeds is a lot like the Diesel itself — reliable, high quality and easy to enjoy.” Please come sample some, a fresh harvest is awaiting you!
